Bulimia/Anorexia from age 9

I suffered with bulimic tendencies from the age of nine, which turned into anorexia at 14. I spent 2 years in an inpatient unit and a general hospital (in and out, in and out) from the age of 15 to 17, but am now well on the way to recovery and am going to university this year (not going to lie - ABSOLUTELY TERRIFIED! I think those of us who suffer with eating disorders are naturally anxious people anyway, but add all the normal university stresses to remembering to take care of yourself... nightmare! I'm still underweight with a BMI of around 15.5 at the moment, though I've gained 1 and a 1/2 stone on my own over the last year Aishky!)

I know how horrendously hard recovery is. In a way, I think bulimia is almost harder to make a conscious decision to recover from, because often people with bulimia aren't emaciated or at death's door (even though it's so dangerous!) so they don't recognise themselves as needing help or even that what they're doing is harmful. So many of my friends seem to think it's 'OK' to 'help it up' when they feel they’ve over eaten and it drives me insane how this culture seems to normalise very abnormal behaviour.

There is a fantastic community in the 'blog world' of eating disorder sufferers and recoverers helping one another - it's incredible and I honestly attribute 75% of my 'staying power' in recovering at home to the support I received from these girls over my 8 months of blogging.

  1. Hi. Making the decision to gain weight again is hard, and it's bound to be a lot harder when you've done it on your own, so well done for that! Good luck with the rest of your recovery, and enjoy uni!! :)
